General Motors (GM) has announced its plan to add a second shift at Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly Plant in the US, creating 1,200 new jobs.

The addition of second shift comes as the company plans to meet the expected market demand for the five cars which are produced at Detroit-Hamtramck facility.

GM plant manager Gary West said: "This is the result of the award-winning vehicles Detroit-Hamtramck produces and the confidence GM has in our team to build world-class quality for our customers."

The company expects the addition of a second shift to increase workforce to approximately 2,800 people at the plant by early 2016.

UAW Local 22 Shop chairman Don LaForest said: "The workforce at Detroit-Hamtramck is second to none.

"We appreciate the opportunity to expand our UAW-GM family."

GM said it has already commenced second shift hiring.

Launched in 1985, the 4.1 million ft2 Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly currently manufactures Chevrolet Volt, Impala and Malibu; and Cadillac ELR on a single production line.

Over the last six years, about $1bn has been invested by GM in the plant, which is due to commence production of the Cadillac CT6 in early 2016.

The announcement comes a day after the firm reported 2015 third-quarter net income of $1.4bn or $0.84 per diluted share, compared to $1.4bn or $0.81 per diluted share in 2014.

GM also reported increased earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) adjusted to $3.1bn and EBIT-adjusted margin to 8.0% compared to EBIT-adjusted of $2.3bn and EBIT-adjusted margin of 5.8% in the third quarter of 2014.

Additionally, the company's net revenue during the quarter was $38.8bn compared to $39.3bn in the third quarter of 2014.

The company paid about $1.5bn to settle ignition-switch recall, which includes $0.9bn related to a Deferred Prosecution Agreement reached with the US Attorney's Office and approximately $0.6bn for settlement of certain civil actions involving 2014 product recalls.
