American automaker General Motors (GM) is set to invest $449m to upgrade its manufacturing processes at Detroit-Hamtramck assembly and Brownstown battery assembly plants.
This move is aimed at the company's next generation of electric vehicles and advanced battery technologies.
Of the total amount, the company will use $384m for the Detroit-Hamtramck plant for new body shop tooling, equipment, and additional plant upgrades to produce next generation Chevrolet Volt and two other new models.
The remaining $65m will be used to upgrade the Brownstown battery assembly plant to support the production of the next generation of lithium-ion batteries and future battery systems.
GM North America manufacturing vice president Gerald Johnson said that General Motors is committed to building award-winning products and developing technologies in America, which helps to grow the company's economy from a resurgent auto industry.
"These investments will help the next-generation Chevrolet Volt build on its position as the leader in electrified propulsion," Johnson added.
